written in a kind of obsolete vernacular [04 Jan 2005|11:42pm]
no one has updated this in about 3 months.

i thought someone should. i volunteered. i'm a real go-getter.

the audio medium will be returning spring semester, though i don't know the start date or show schedule [which may change every semester due to class scheduling]

we will be short one member, unless she's changed her mind and i don't know about it, from last semester. meagan coleman has left us for bigger and better things. namely a semester off and then vcu next fall. as far as i know.

so this leaves the three guys. me. jon. kevin.

don't worry, the show will still be good. our musical tastes and libraries are constantly being expanded and refined.

details and shit later.

seriously,

Nick on Show 1 [19 Oct 2004|01:12am]
[ mood | blank ]
[ music | harvey danger ]

our first show of the year sucked.

a half hour before our scheduled beginning, the CNU internet went down disrupting our plans for mass last minute advertising and, we thought, any form of broadcasting.

so we went at 7, all four of us, and sat there screwing around, all four of us, for an hour and 20 minutes.

the internet still didn't come back up, all four of us.

we'd spent that 80 minutes playing off the cuff music and napoleon dynamite soundclips all the while ignorant to the fact that we were and had been broadcasting locally, to the CNU network only. thankfully, that spencer guy informed us of this and explained why we are all completely retarded. thanks and shout outs to that spencer guy.

so from 8:25 to 9pm, the audio medium could be heard on CNU computers only. and boy, was it terrible. none of us had actually thought we would get a change to broadcast after that first 80 minutes of nothing so we were unprepared, scrambled, and altogether worthless. we were all talking at once, phone calls met with dead air...it was chaotic.

tuesday night will be better. more professional.

though, i have to say, i felt like an ass mass-advertising the first night, the second night i'm going to feel like a sheepish, embarassed ass.

THE AUDIO MEDIUM ON WCNU THIS FALL [10 Oct 2004|12:55pm]
[ mood | jubilant ]
[ music | Braid - "First Day Back" ]

That's right kids (humans and goats alike), The Audio Medium Radio Show is about to start, picking up where The Retro Radar Radio Show and the Mike, Kris, & Kevin Show left off.

WCNU kicks off next Saturday and we, of course, got our requested time slot (Monday & Tuesday 7-9pm) which means the very first Audio Medium show will be next Monday, October 18th, at 7pm.

The format for The Audio Medium will vary slightly from that of Retro Radar in that every host will have several song selections every broadcast rather than one host programming an entire hour. This, we feel, will create an even higher level of song-to-song diversity and, frankly, keep all the hosts involved.

I should also remind everyone that the Audio Medium is hosted by the same group of tasteful and intelligent bloaks as last year, plus one: Kevin Ferdinand Myers. Kevin brings with him an astute ear for fine music of past generations as well as an almost preternatural sense of international finance.

Kev's golden oldies + Meg's experimental/garage leanings + Jon's emo tendencies + Nick's melancholic streak = THE MOST DIVERSE AND INSANELY HIP RADIO SHOW EVER CONCEIVED BY MAN OR BEAST. Well, except that God had a show in '99 called "Lil Soundbytes 'O' Christ" and our show probably ties that one...

But tied for first with a divine being is not too shabby, sayeth the Lord.

T-shirts for WCNU are supposedly coming soon.

TheAudioMedium.com is also supposedly coming soon.

Remember to listen in. I'll be IMing everyone on my buddy list at least once or twice sometime this week as a reminder.

so the show will begin in mid-october. yes, later than we want. yes, due to administrative crap. but it IS coming. we'll know which timeslot we got on september 22. but for now, plan for a monday/tuesday timeslot from 7-9pm. something like that.

a little bit different than our weekend shows last year. but, i (and the rest of the hosts) think, better.

the format will also be a little different but details on that later.

also: the new website! well, it's not up. we have to pay for it and stuff. but that will be ready too.

for now, i really just want to say i could crap my pants i'm so eager to get started.

PS - tonight was the les savy fav show and i'm very bitter about it being in DC and not richmond.

who wants to know why Sam Ubl sucks? [17 Aug 2004|07:52pm]
[ mood | irritated ]
[ music | the olympic theme...it's 8 o clock. ]

just read this opening line to his review of Half Cousin's The Function Room:

"It's no secret: Music is best when it has a secret to keep."

and, no, it doesn't get better:

"Often, the longer an album's treasures take to reveal themselves, the longer they take to wear thin. But a record can look good both from afar and under the microscope, as evidenced by Scottish collective Half Cousin's The Function Room."

that first half-paragraph accomplishes two great feats in tandem:

1. it becomes the most sluggish, drudging, boring piece of crap i've ever read in a opening paragraph of a review on pitchfork media.

2. it does absolutely nothing to hint at what kind of album this might be or what sort of basis there is for the 8.1 rating (is it just me, or has pitchfork been handing out a lot of easy 7's and 8's lately? have they gone soft?) other than sam ubl's own personal need to be hip and sound knowledgable.

read the rest of the review if you really need proof that he is neither. it's absolutely saturated with bullshit PSAT words and ripoff phrases from every other pitchfork reviewer.

i'm sure some of the other reviewers are of this quality as well. sam ubl, sorry man, you're the only one i've noticed.

where the hell is donald trump when someone really needs to be axed...

Various things. [14 Aug 2004|11:02pm]
Conor will be releasing two albums next year. The first is reportedly a traditional Bright Eyes indie/folk album. Although, I'm guessing it will most likely be leaning more in the direction of alternative-country than his previous works, mainly because of the new material he played the last time I saw him. The other will be a "digital pop" album, somewhat along the lines of the Postal Service (I'm assuming), and will more than likely be released the same day.

Over the past couple of days I've obtained the following new albums:

Ted Leo And The Pharmacists - Shake The Streets
Dizzee Rascal - Showtime
Elliott Smith - From A Basement On The Hill
The Good Life - Album Of The Year

If you want any of them, let me know or just download them from me the next time I'm online. Or if you want, you can wait until we get to school so it will only take a couple of seconds.

Finally, I've been listening to a lot of the Exploding Hearts lately. If you haven't heard them, they're somewhat of a retro garage-rock band who are perfectly built around catchy lyrics and clever guitar work. I recommend listening to them.

The Fiery Furnaces
I love the music.
I hate the singer. Godamn I hate the singer. Like, the music is just wonderful and everything and you are like okay this is going to be great. Then the lead singer starts his stupid charade and then you are like damn that kinda sucks.... and then the song begins to suck and you are like shit. What an anti-climax.

Pitchfork gave it a 9.6, which kinda goes to show how many grains of salt you can take that with.

Polyphonic Spree Drummer Brian Teasley Makes the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List
Godspeed You Black Emperor laugh it up from underground shoebomb facility

Cory D. Byrom reports:
Brian Teasley, percussionist for Texas-based indie-pop outfit The Polyphonic Spree, caused a major ruckus at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport last Thursday, and in the process managed to weasel his way onto the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list-- for about an hour and a half. The offense? Concealing a microphone in his baggage-- a Placid Audio Copperphone, to be exact-- that was subsequently mistaken by airport security for a bomb.

No word of the scare had reached the Birmingham Airport Thursday evening when Teasley arrived in Alabama, where he currently resides, though he was disappointed to discover his luggage hadn't arrived. So he filed a complaint with American Airlines, then proceeded to do what anyone else in this situation would do: He went to Taco Bell.

It was upon arriving back at home that Teasley was approached by an FBI agent. Appearing seemingly out of nowhere, the agent asked, "Are you Brian Teasley?" When Teasley replied in the affirmative, the agent stated calmly into his lapel, "We got him." As Teasley tells it, cars immediately came from every direction at once, blocking off the driveway and thoroughly congesting the street. It turns out that after the airport security discovered the device in one of Teasley's bags, five gates were shut down in the C terminal, the bomb disposal robot was called out, and the FBI was contacted.

"If you're looking for a solid alibi, being on a national TV show is a good one," Teasley joked in a telephone interview with Pitchfork, referring to the fact that The Polyphonic Spree had recently performed on Late Night with Craig Kilborn. Once Teasley realized the source of the misunderstanding, he told the agent that he had the performance on TiVo, and could easily show them the microphone in question. After viewing the performance, the FBI were able to confirm with Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport that the item in question was, in fact, just a microphone. However, why the agents were unable to just disassemble the damn thing and figure out that it wasn't a bomb is a question you might not want to ask yourself, if you'd like to feel good about the state of national security.

"I don't want to over-dramatize the situation," Teasley stated, "but there were two or three minutes when I thought I was going to be in Guantanamo Bay with the Abu Ghraib people holding a thumbs up while pointing to my penis. I wasn't really scared about Guantanamo, I just didn't want people to see my penis. I'm a very private person." As for the Spree, you can catch the terrorists, er, band on tour throughout the rest of August at the following dates:

08-13 Chicago, IL - Park West
08-14 Chicago, IL - Park West
08-16 Washington, D.C. - 9:30 Club

I talked to the girl who is designing our site and she recommended that we get the $4 a month plan. It basically provides us with 3 times as much bandwidth as the standard plan. If you're down with paying 12 dollars respond here or IM me.

[ mood | blah ]
[ music | the wrens ]

i am ridiculously excited about starting school again.

this year is going to be INSANE.

i'm serious.

in other news, 'the meadowlands' gets better everytime i listen to it.

what's everyone's top picks for last year's best album?

my favorites [basically, the cd's i own that came out in 2003]:
1. my morning jacket - 'it still moves'
2. the wrens - 'the meadowlands'
3. the postal service - 'give up'
4. cursive - 'the ugly organ'
5. the shins - 'chutes too narrow'
6. the decemberists - 'her majesty'
7. death cab for cutie - 'transatlantacism'
8. brand new - 'deja entendu'
9. the strokes - 'room on fire'
10. broken social scene - 'you forgot it in people'
11. murder by death - 'who will survive and what will be left of them'

you may be startled to find broken social scene almost at the bottom.

yeah, well. i'm a dick. even with the lyrical misgivings, the postal service, to me, destroys 'you forgot it in people.' even brand new is a more enjoyable listen, i think.

but that's just me.

anyway, those are my top 11. all great records for all sorts of different reasons and moods.

My recommendations. [18 Jul 2004|07:38pm]
Wilco - A Ghost Is Born
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
Spoon - Kill The Moonlight

Three great albums that I've been listening to a lot of lately. Definitely check out the Talking Heads album, it's phenomenal.

Also, once we get our site finished I'm probably going to add the following things to it (i'll pay for the hosting fees since I have all these plans):

-Reviews section with 1-2 paragraph long reviews
-Articles section
-Features secion with various top album lists
-Staff picks
-Album of the month feature
-Local bands section with MP3s and a short description

I kind of want to try and make it into a mini-zine. Let me know what you think.

Who killed Kurt Cobain? [16 Jul 2004|01:11am]
After finishing his biography today, I decided to look up a bunch of information regarding the other side(s) of Kurt's death. I came across two sites that make fairly valid cases as to why Kurt did not commit suicide.

I'm still skeptical about the sites, but regardless, they're pretty interesting.

http://www.justiceforkurt.com/investigation/reasons.shtml

http://www.indefenceofkurtcobain.com/

http://www.indefenceofkurtcobain.com/images/jtemay04op.jpg (from the site above)

Eldon Hoke (aka "El Duce"), singer of a band called the Mentors, claimed he was offered $50,000 by Courtney Love three months earlier to kill her husband. On March 6, 1996, Hoke was administered a polygraph test by Dr. Edward Gelb, who is one of the country's leading polygraph experts. He was also teaching the advanced polygraph course for the FBI. Hoke passed a lie detector test with 99.7% certainty that he was telling the truth. Eldon Hoke briefly appeared in the Nick Broomfield "Kurt & Courtney" documentary.

Kurt apparently had 3 times the lethal 225 mgs dose of heroin (1.52 mgs per liter) in his blood system and intravenous puncture marks in both arms. Medical experts will tell you that such an amount, when injected directly into the bloodstream will leave you incapacitated and cause you to lapse into a coma within seconds, if not kill you instantly before the needle can even be removed from your arm. It's common for deaths of heroin overdoses to be found with the needle still sticking out of the arm. That's how quickly one lethal dose can kill a person, let alone three.

(both quotes are from the first)

seriously, no one else is buying or listening to new music?

i'm going to update again. but i will not be the next to update after this. four in a row is just too many. get it together, people.

i bought "daydream nation" by sonic youth. i haven't really grasped the greatness of it...maybe it's like "loveless" and it will come to me with lots of listening.

that, or i'm stupid.

i also borrowed "dear catastrophe waitress" by belle and sebastian from the library. its good. interesting music and melodies. but pitchfork is right, it is a little stuffy.

dammit, jon, i want my royal tenenbaums. mail the damn thing or something. the hole in my heart, which is already the size of rhode island, grows by the quarter hour.
